All-Time MSFA Teams
As part of the 20th anniversary celebration of the Mid-States Football Association, Information Director Larry Alter has chosen all-time Mideast League and Midwest League teams.
The selections feature players from 16 of the 24 schools which have competed in the MSFA since the association was formed in 1994. Only four of the charter members – Trinity International, Taylor, Saint Xavier and Olivet Nazarene – remain as part of the 14-team MSFA.
Headlining the players are four NAIA Rawlings Players of the Year – Bo Hurley (1997) of Findlay, Cory Jacquay (2004) of Saint Francis, Ind., Brian Kurtz (2006) of Saint Francis, Ind. and Jimmy Coy (2012) of Saint Xavier.
Hurley led Findlay to NAIA championships in 1995 and 1997, compiling an incredible 36-2-2 record over three seasons. Coy led Saint Xavier to the 2011 NAIA crown. Two other schools, Westminster and Marian, also have national championships, Westminster winning in 1994, the first year of MSFA competition, and Marian capturing the 2012 title.
These top performers, the best of the best in small college football, account for a large number of MSFA record holders led by such stalwarts as Nathan Norman (St. Ambrose), the all-time single-season rushing (2,055 yards) and all-purpose yardage (2,496) leader; Jeremy Dutcher (Saint Francis, Ind.), the all-time single-season wide receiver (1,547 yards); Derek Besgrove (Walsh), who piled up 5,738 yards as the all-time career rushing leader; and Mike Maher (Saint Xavier), who had 4,487 career receiving yards.
The selections are dominated by three-time All-Americans Nick Krinn, an offensive lineman from Saint Francis, Ind. and linebacker Craig Mills of Westminster as well as two-time All-Americans. Those include defensive tackle Nate Arnold, linebacker Ray Long and defensive back Nate Weihrauch of Findlay; running back Willie Murray of Geneva; linebacker Darius Green, offensive lineman Nick Hegger and defensive lineman Oku Satcher of McKendree; defensive back Wayne Johnson of St. Francis, Ill.; offensive lineman Corey Cronk, Dutcher, defensive back Jamie Holman and Kurtz of Saint Francis, Ind.; linebacker Justin Heth of Taylor; offensive linemen Mike Galassi and Doug Neff, Besgrove and return specialist Daryl Lyons of Walsh.
Most of the honorees also achieved MSFA and/or NAIA academic accolades.
