CHICAGO, Ill. - Sophomore quarterback Alex Martinez (St. Laurence HS / Burbank, Ill.) became the second Saint Xavier quarterback in as many weeks to be selected as the Mid-States Football Association's Midwest League Offensive Player of the Week, announced the league office on Monday.
Martinez threw for six touchdowns in his first start this season, leading No. 24 Saint Xavier to a 48-13 win at Missouri Baptist on Saturday. The sophomore matched his career high in passing touchdowns, and was just one TD shy of the SXU single-game record. Collecting 346 yards through the air, Saturday's performance was Martinez' second career 300-yard game in just his seventh appearance.
The Cougars have claimed both MSFA Offensive Player of the Week awards in the early season, as quarterback Justin Hunniford (North Central [Ill.] / Frankfort, Ill.) earned the honor on Sept. 4 following the season-opening win over No. 5 Marian.
Saint Xavier returns to Deaton Field this Saturday, September 16, where they will put their 2-0 record on the line against Lindenwood-Belleville. Kickoff against the Lynx is set for 6:00 p.m.
