CHICAGO, Ill. – Following No. 24 Saint Xavier's season-opening win over No. 5 Marian last Thursday night, a trio of Cougars were recognized as the Mid-States Football Association's Midwest League Players of the Week, announced by the MSFA on Monday.
Quarterback Justin Hunniford (JR/Frankfort, Ill.), defensive lineman Dimitri Joe, and kicker Abdul Mahdi (SR/Chicago, Ill.) were selected as MSFA Offensive, Defensive, and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively. Hunniford racked up 425 passing yards in the win, third-most by any quarterback during Week 1 in the NAIA The junior rushed for 2 TDs and threw for one more in the first half for a 26-7 lead at the break, then after the Knights took the lead late in the fourth quarter, threw a 54-yard TD pass on 4th-and-9 for the game-winning score.
Joe finished with 11 total tackles, third-most on the team in the Cougars' win to earn this week's defensive honor. Along with two tackles for loss, his strip-sack on the Knight's final drive clinched the Cougars' first win over Marian in three years
As the Special Teams Player of the Week, Mahdi scored a total of eight points against Marian. The senior connected on two field goals in the second quarter, including a 53-yard attempt that is tied for the third-longest in program history.
Hunniford and Joe earn their first career MSFA Player of the Week awards, while Mahdi now has been selected for the honor nine times over his four-year SXU career.
The Cougars make their road debut this weekend, when they travel to face the Missouri Baptist Spartans on Saturday, September 9. Kickoff from St. Louis is set for 11:00 a.m.
