(Forest City, Iowa) The Quincy University football team was able to close out their 2009 season with a 35-20 win on the road over Waldorf College, ending their season with back to back wins for the first time since the 1994 season.
Quincy jumped out to a 21-0 lead over Waldorf, scoring 14 points in the first quarter of the game. The 14 points in the first quarter are more than Quincy had scored in the first quarter of the previous 10 games. Quincy started the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown pass from Dustin Jacoby to Lyndsey Diggs at the 8:46 mark. The touchdown capped an 11 play, 46-yard drive for the Hawks on their first drive of the game. Quincy followed with two more touchdown consecutive touchdown drives including a 7-yard touchdown run by Diggs on their next possession.
Following a sack and forced fumble by Kaleb Webb, in which the Hawks recovered at the Waldorf 10-yard line, the Hawks added to their lead with a 1-yard touchdown run by Corey Williams to make the score 21-0 early in the second quarter. Waldorf got on the board with a 4-yard touchdown run with 11:59 left in the second and made the score 21-14 after an 11-yard touchdown run with 6:54 left in the quarter.
Quincy pushed the lead to 28-14 after a Dustin Jacoby 2-yard touchdown run with just 33-seconds left that capped a 53-yard touchdown drive. Waldorf cut the score to 28-20 after a five-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter with Waldorf missing the extra point. Quincy responded on their next drive when Corey Williams broke loose for a 32-yard touchdown run on a third-and-two play. Quincy forced Waldorf to turn the ball over on downs on each of their next two possessions as they held on for the 35-20 win.
Quincy's 35 points were a season high while Corey Williams finished the game with a season high 150 yard s rushing on 23 carries with two touchdowns. Lyndsey Diggs added 37 yards rushing and two scores while Jacoby finished the game 16-of-27 passing for 118 yards and one touchdown. Aaron Fuehne had a team high 44 yards receiving on six receptions. Defensively the Hawks were led by Luther Rush with 12 tackles while punter Kyle Homeyer helped the Hawks maintain field position in the game with four punts, averaging 33.5 yards per punt including three punts inside the Waldorf 20-yard line.
Quincy finishes the season with a 4-7 overall record and in fifth place in the MSFA Midwest League with a 3-4 mark.
