The Quincy University football team was unable to pull off an upset over an FCS opponent for the second consecutive week, falling 72-3 on the road to Southeast Missouri State University. Quincy knocked off FCS foe Indiana State last week 26-20 in overtime but were overwhelmed by Southeast Missouri on Thursday night.
Southeast Missouri opened the game with a flurry, scoring 21 points in the game's first five-minutes of play. The Redhawks opened the game with an 80 yard kick return to the Hawks' 11 yard line. Just three plays later the Redhawks scored on a two yard touchdown run by Henry Harris to get the scoring started. Quincy turned the ball over on their first possession, throwing an interception at the 24-yard line, which was returned for a score by Tyler Epstein. The Redhawks added to the score just two-minutes later when Tylor Brock recovered a blocked punt in the end zone, making the score 21-0. Southeast Missouri tacked on one more touchdown in first quarter when Matt Scheible connected with Chantae Ahamefule for a 32-yard reception at the 7:02 mark.
The Redhawks added to their lead just 16-seconds into the second quarter when Harris scored on a three-yard run and extended their lead to 42-0 when Scheible hooked up with Walter Peoples for a 17-yard score at the 12:34 mark. The Quincy defense was able to keep the Redhawks out of the end zone on their next possession, holding them to a 20-yard field goal to make the score 45-0. Harris added his third touchdown of the game at the 6:53 mark of the second quarter on a 14-yard run. The Redhawks pushed the score to 58-0 when Scheible scored from nine yards out with just 38-seconds left before halftime.
The Hawks put together their best drive of the game mid-way through the third quarter, going 81-yards on 14 plays. After setting up for a punt, the Hawks had their drive extended when Southeast Missouri was called for a roughing the kicker. The Hawks took advantage of the miscue as two plays later Corey Williams darted through the line off the right side for 36 yards to the Redhawk 31 yard line. Williams added another 10 yard scamper and after a four yard pass completion to Chris Jenkins the Hawks were set up with a first and goal situation. Quincy was stopped however and forced to kick the field goal, marking Beard's third successful attempt of the season and making the score 58-3. Southeast Missouri was able to add two more late touchdowns to bring the final score to 72-3, marking just the third time in program history Quincy has allowed 70 or more points in a game.
Quincy did threaten late in the game for a potential touchdown when Trevor Durham guided the offense to the Redhawks goal line. Durham slowly moved the Hawks to the Redhawks one yard line, doing so on a 21 play and 80 yard drive, but came up short on a quarterback dive on fourth and goal.
Quincy was held to 220 total yards of offense, rushing for 157 yards while the Redhawks compiled 512 yards of total offense, including 282 on the ground and 230 in the air. Quincy quarterback Sam Donatucci finished 7-of-17 for 47 yards while Williams led Quincy with 81 yards rushing on 13 carries. Trevor Durham finished the game 5-of-10 passing for 16 yards while adding 36 yards rushing.
Quincy stands at 1-1 overall and opens their 2009 home schedule next weekend, September 12th against Walsh University. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
